Jose Mourinho: 'Envy is the biggest tribute that the shadows do to the man'
Always one for inspiring quotes, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho hit back at Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness in eloquent fashion Friday over the criticism he received following his side's Champions League elimination.
Chelsea's 2-2 extra-time draw versus Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday saw PSG advance on away goals, but the result was marred by the sight of nine Chelsea players surrounding referee Bjorn Kuipers and successfully pressuring him into assigning an incorrect red card to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
"The worst bit of dirty tricks was from Chelsea, surrounding the referee, the reaction was disgraceful," said Carragher. Souness's assessment was equally unflattering: "... Someone brushes you, you want to go down and try and get them in trouble. That's how pathetic it is."
"You know the world is a big strange," Mourinho told reporters, continuing:
Maybe because of diet and maybe the quality of the products we are eating, but memories are getting shorter. Because, you know, when Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness speak about it, it's because they are having a problem for sure.
Jamie stopped playing a couple of years ago and, in two years, he has forgotten everything he did on the pitch. Mr. Souness also, but he stopped playing a long time ago. I coach Benfica after he left there so I know a lot about him, so much about him. But I have had a certain kind of education, not just in football but in life, and I prefer to laugh.
Envy is the biggest tribute that the shadows do to the man. It's about life.
Never change, Mourinho.
