Gerrard takes jab at Chelsea supporters: 'It's nice of them to turn up for once'
Steven Gerrard isn't going to get chummy with Chelsea supporters, even if they gave him a standing ovation as he was substituted in Sunday's 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Quite the opposite, actually.
Gerrard, playing in his last match at the stadium ahead of his summer move to the LA Galaxy of MLS, was concerned with the fact that the Chelsea fans, with whom he's had a turbulent relationship over the years, jeered and sang disparaging songs about him endlessly before the brief cheer as he walked off the pitch.
"I was more happy with the ovation from the Liverpool fans," Gerrard told Sky Sports after the match, in which he scored the Reds' lone goal. "The Chelsea fans showed respect for a couple of seconds for me, but slaughtered me all game so I'm not going to get drawn into wishing the Chelsea fans well.
"It's nice of them to turn up for once today. The standing ovation from a stadium is always nice, but what's important to me is the Liverpool fans and they have been there since day one."
In fairness to Gerrard, the Chelsea supporters did show up with these signs on Sunday, referencing his infamous slip last season:
