Victor Valdes not selected for U.S. tour, expected to leave Manchester United
Don't expect to see Victor Valdes between the posts at Old Trafford this season.
In what was his first press conference since Manchester United departed on its preseason tour of the United States, manager Louis van Gaal provided a harsh update on Valdes's future, criticising the Spanish shot-stopper for not following the club's principles.
"He is not selected because he does not follow my philosophy," Van Gaal said, according to the Guardian. "There is not one place for one player - the philosophy is how you play football and how you maintain your match rhythm. For example he refused last year to play in our second team.
"That is one aspect of our philosophy but there are a lot of others for how you play like a goalkeeper for Manchester United. When you are not willing to follow the principles of the philosophy there is only one way and that is out."
Asked if Valdes would be sold, Van Gaal simply replied: "Yes."
Valdes signed an 18-month contract with United in January that only had an option for a further year. Prior to that, he had been completing his rehab at Old Trafford as a free agent after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
United is in Seattle for the opening match of its tour against Club America.
