Report: Liverpool's Rickie Lambert to finalise West Brom move in coming days
Facing a logjam up front, Liverpool is reportedly on the verge of clearing up some space among its forward corps.
Seldom-used striker Rickie Lambert is expected to complete a move to West Brom in the coming days, with Andy Hunter of the Guardian reporting that the Baggies are firm favourites to land the Englishman thanks to their ability to offer him guaranteed minutes.
Lambert, 33, started just seven Premier League matches last season, his first at Anfield after making a £4.5-million move from Southampton. Relegated to a bench role, the veteran found the net just twice.
Though the Reds will certainly not be able to recoup the entire fee paid for the striker, Hunter notes that West Brom's initial offer is in the £3-million range, a starting point that should be more than enough to see a deal come to fruition.
West Brom bench boss Tony Pulis admitted the veteran striker is free to leave Liverpool, adding that his club is considering bringing in someone with a proven history - outside of last season - of finding the back of the net.
"Rickie is available. Liverpool have made that known. We’d be interested. It’s very important that we get players who will score goals and Rickie’s got a great goal-scoring record," Pulis said.
"From what I can gather from people at Liverpool his fitness levels are very very good and he is desperate to play football. He didn’t play last year so it’s like bringing a brand new car out of the garage if we did sign him. Just putting a bit of petrol in it and letting it run."
