The 22-year-old midfielder penned a five-year contract to make the reported £12-million transfer official, as midfielder Remy Cabella joins the French club on a season-long loan, with the option to make the deal permanent.

"I am delighted to be a Newcastle United player," Thauvin said on the team's website.

"I have come from France to a really big club and am very happy to be here.

"It is a big honour to know that Newcastle have been after me for such a long time and that they wanted me that much."

Thauvin joins the Premier League following two seasons with Marseille, where he made 81 appearances and found the back of the net 15 times.

"Florian is a player the Club have been watching for a long time and I am delighted that we have been able to sign him," manager Steve McClaren said.

"He is a perfect signing for this Club – someone who is young, with great potential and is one of the best young players in Europe.

"He is an exciting, creative talent who can score goals and make assists, and we believe he will have a very bright future at Newcastle."

Thauvin joins Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba, and Ivan Toney as new arrivals at St James' Park.

Besides the senior team, Thauvin has represented France at multiple levels, helping the country capture the 2013 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.
