Rooney regrets Vegas visit, warns teammates about travel before 2016 Euro Cup
Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney may be one of England's all-time top goal-scorers, but that achievement didn't come without sacrifice, or learning from a few mistakes.
Rooney regrets an ill-timed trip to Las Vegas ahead of the 2012 European Championship and says he doesn't plan on repeating the error now that England has qualified for the 2016 edition's finals.
"I know, personally, when I was suspended before the Euros I went away on holiday, which, looking back, I regret," Rooney told reporters. "I'll certainly get my part right this time and, as a team, we are all building to being successful."
The 2016 Euro Cup will take place four weeks after the 2015-16 Premier League season concludes in June, and England's players have been asked to keep their vacations short. Rooney says that's just one of the sacrifices he and his teammates have to make in order to compete.
"It's something I've learnt," Rooney explained. "At the time, I thought it was no problem (to go to Las Vegas) and now I know I shouldn't have done it. It's flights and jet lag. I was there with my family, but flying so far, it takes a while to get over the jet lag."
Rooney said he'd offered the same advice to his teammates.
"Yeah, we've already discussed that," Rooney revealed, when asked that very question. "I don't think we'll have that long off before the tournament so the lads won't have the option to go too far."
Rooney has faith that the current crop of Three Lions players can achieve big things in France next year.
"I believe we have a very good squad of players," Rooney said. "We have got to go and prove that - especially for some of the lads who haven't been to tournaments - to go and play against better teams and better players and get that confidence of doing it.
"We know we can't go into a tournament like we did last year and go out the way we did. If we are going to be successful, we need to find the way we are going to do that and it's something we're working on."
