Tyias Browning hopes he has done enough to retain Everton place

After keeping Jefferson Montero quiet in Saturday's trip to Swansea City, Tyias Browning is hoping he can make the Everton right-back berth his own.

The Ecuadorian winger had started the campaign looking strong before the visit of the Toffees, but the 21-year-old defender put in a solid performance in his first start. He earned a place in the Barclays Premier League Team of the Week and prevented himself from joining the growing list of those shamed by the pace and trickery of Montero.

"I was just trying to keep my name out of that book!" Browning told the Liverpool Echo.

He deputised for Seamus Coleman, whose hamstring strain wasn't risked by manager Roberto Martinez, and fitted in seamlessly.

"I had an idea that I would be playing on Saturday, with Seamus being out, but I only found out on the day and I knew it would be a good challenge for me.

"It took me a couple of minutes to get going against (Montero) because he was at me from the start but once I got into the game I was all right."

He was tactically sound, shutting off the channels to prevent the winger from making his dangerous forays inside.

"The lads were just telling me to keep going and stay on him because Montero was doing what I wanted him to do."

He added: "I knew it would be a tough test but I'd rather face a tough challenge than nobody and the game has given me something to work on."

Coleman is one of Everton's most consistent performers and perhaps the hardest to usurp from his position, but Browning hopes he's done enough to stake a claim for a start in the trip to West Bromwich Albion.

"Hopefully I've done enough to get a game next week."

The Merseyside club is already putting last season's disappointing 11th-placed finish behind with a strong start, earning a spot in the Europa League places after six games.
