Everton's Baines returns to training ahead of schedule
Leighton Baines has returned to training earlier than expected and is edging closer to making his season debut after suffering an ankle injury ahead of Everton's first Premier League match of the season.
The Everton defender underwent his second operation on that ankle after injuring himself during preseason training. Manager Roberto Martinez says he'll be assessed during upcoming training sessions before putting a date on his return.
"It is a big boost," Martinez told reporters ahead of Everton's weekend encounter with Sunderland.
"To have the opportunity to Leighton back from a long spell out has been great. For him to join the group this week, earlier than we expected is a really positive sign. Now we need to see how quickly he can get back to full fitness and how quickly he can be involved in the squad for selection."
The original timetable estimated that Baines would miss 12-14 weeks, forcing him out until November, but Martinez credited the 30-year-old's vigor for his early recovery.
"Naturally he is very fit and in great condition," he said. "The attitude of working hard and following the programmes of the medical department is important but I would highlight the natural condition. He has a terrific lifestyle and that allows him to be fitter, stronger, and more ready to cope with treatments and injuries."
Baines previously injured the ankle near the conclusion of the 2014-15 campaign and underwent surgery in May. He sustained the latest injury shortly after making his return in August.
