Riyad Mahrez commits to Leicester until end of season
Riyad Mahrez's man of the match performance against Chelsea on Monday was just another in a long line of fine showings from the Algerian, and his appearances have caught the attention of teams across Europe.
Mahrez joined table-topping Leicester City for a paltry £400,000 in 2014, and could now be worth at least 50 times that amount in the January transfer window, with 11 goals and seven assists in 14 Premier League starts, but he intends to stay put amid rumours of a potential transfer.
"It's best for me to stay until the end of the season. I was at Le Havre, I had six months left but nobody came to get me. Leicester tried very hard to get me," Mahrez told the French radio station RMC, according to the Guardian.
"I could feel that they wanted me. I took the decision without knowing the culture or the area. It was a risk. When you come from far away and you ended up in the Premier League it makes you happy."
The Foxes sit atop English football despite being widely predicted for relegation this term, and the 2-1 win over reigning champion Chelsea was seen as a statement of intent by many personalities within the game. Mahrez is keeping grounded, however.
"We are not going to win the league, no. I don't think we have broad enough shoulders to do it. At the moment we are first, but that means nothing. The big teams will wake up at some point," he said.
Leicester returns to top-flight action with a trip to Everton on Saturday.
