Montreal Impact admit Drogba's potential return to Chelsea 'out of our control'
The Montreal Impact confirmed Wednesday they have no say over whether striker Didier Drogba remains with the MLS club for the next season or returns to former club Chelsea.
Drogba sat beside owner Roman Abramovich and Guus Hiddink during Chelsea's 3-1 win over Sunderland on the weekend, and has reportedly been offered a role at the club, either as an ambassador or backroom staff member.
Chelsea is currently trying to negotiate Drogba's early departure from the Impact, where the Ivorian has a contract until the end of the 2016 season.
But after communicating with the Premier League champion, the Impact are unsure whether they can keep him.
"We are currently in contact with Didier Drogba and Chelsea FC. We are doing everything we can to have him back with the Impact in 2016," the club said on Twitter. "We understand his attachment to his former club and his desire to help them. We are willing to accommodate him.
"But our objective is to have him back for another season, as agreed in his contract. This situation is out of our control."
Drogba helped the Impact reach the MLS postseason for the second time in franchise history, scoring 12 goals in his first 14 appearances.
