Buckley moved to Sunderland for around £2.5 million in 2014 after impressing at Brighton & Hove Albion but has never been afforded a decent run of games for the Wearside club. His temporary stint at Birmingham follows his miserly one start while on loan at Leeds United earlier this season.
The 26-year-old could be named in the matchday squad Saturday for Birmingham's trip to promotion-chasing Derby County.
