The design harks back to the emblem of 1956 that never graced a club strip. Chairman Dejphon Chansiri expressed his pride in the crest that will be on the team's kit for the 2016-17 campaign.
"Since taking over the club, I have enjoyed many conversations on the crest with supporters across all age groups and it soon became clear that a new crest would be better received were it in keeping with our heritage," Chansiri told the club website.
"Having studied at length the rich traditions of the club, the crest that stood out to me in every way was the first official design of the 1950s and I am fascinated by the fact it was never actually used on the team's shirts."
It was decided the club motto of "Consilio et Animis" - translated as "By Wisdom and Courage" - would remain.
The change spells the end of the previous emblem, which saw its basic form adorning the side's uniform since 1973. It's been suggested Canadian rapper Drake's clothing line, October's Very Own, used Wednesday's design as inspiration for its logo.
Owls captain Glenn Loovens spoke of his excitement in the unveiling of the emblem.
"Being skipper, this is a particularly special moment and I can't wait to see the crest on the shirts as we all look forward to a future that will hopefully coincide with the return of our status in the Premier League," he said.
Wednesday currently occupies the playoff positions in the Championship, and is nine points short of Middlesbrough in the automatic places.
