Middlesbrough has failed in its attempts to make a significant splurge in the transfer market with the signing of Jordan Rhodes from Blackburn Rovers breaking down on Sunday.
The Lancashire outfit announced it had "reluctantly" allowed the striker to talk with promotion-chasing Boro on Friday morning, but the 25-year-old was unable to agree terms with the Teesside team, as confirmed on the club website.
The collapsed transfer of Rhodes was reported to have been worth £9 million and would have made it the second-most expensive acquisition in club history, slotting between £12.8-million Afonso Alves and £8.15-million Massimo Maccarone in the list of pricey purchases.
Rhodes signed with Blackburn for £8 million from Huddersfield Town in 2012 and boasts some impressive goal-scoring pedigree. The Scotland international has scored 120 goals in 188 league starts since the beginning of the 2011-12 campaign.
In a cruel twist in the Championship fixture list, Middlesbrough's next match is against Blackburn on Feb. 6.
