La Liga season suspended indefinitely due to coronavirus
The Spanish football season is suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, La Liga announced Monday.
La Liga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation initially announced on March 12 the season would be postponed for two matchdays after it was revealed Real Madrid players were placed in quarantine over fears they were exposed to the virus.
However, it was agreed during a meeting with the country's football governing body that the season won't resume without the approval of the Spanish government.
The statement reads:
The Monitoring Commission established by the current RFEF-LaLiga Coordination Agreement agrees the suspension of professional football competitions until the authorities of the Government of Spain and the General Administration of the State consider that they can be resumed without creating any health risk.
Both the RFEF and LaLiga wish to express our greatest public gratitude to all those who are dedicating their best efforts to provide essential services to the Spanish people and also share our condolences for all the deceased and a warm embrace from the world of football to the many families that are losing loved ones.
The COVID-19 crisis in Spain has continued to escalate since the season was originally suspended. It's the third-most affected nation behind China and Italy with over 33,000 confirmed cases and 2,182 deaths.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez confirmed Sunday that Spain's strict lockdown measures will remain in place until at least April 11.
Real Madrid have yet to report any confirmed cases, though a handful of clubs in Spain have been impacted by the virus.
Valencia are one of the most heavily affected clubs in Spain with 35% of the squad being diagnosed with COVID-19, according to Reuters.
Meanwhile, Deportivo Alaves confirmed last week that 15 people from the club have been infected, including three first-team players, and Espanyol reported six cases.
