Ronaldo, James to miss Olympics in favour of Euro 2016, Copa America
Those hoping to catch a glimpse of Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez at Rio 2016 are out of luck, as the Real Madrid teammates will miss this summer's competition.
Although the pair are both eligible to compete at the event in Rio de Janeiro in August, Ronaldo will instead represent Portugal at the Euro 2016 in France, while Rodriguez will suit up for Colombia at the Copa America Centenario in the United States next month, according to ESPN FC.
While there's been no official confirmation yet, Portugal's Olympic team coach Rui Jorge admitted that he is preparing his squad without considering Ronaldo as an option.
"We do not yet know exactly about the three players over 23, we will wait, but I don't believe Cristiano Ronaldo will be there," Jorge told Portuguese outlet Lance, as translated by ESPN FC.
Meanwhile, Rodriguez has already disclosed his preference to play with Colombia at the Copa America.
"James spoke privately with coaches from the Colombia senior team and the decision was taken for him to go to the Copa America," Colombian FA president Ramon Jesurun revealed to ESPN Deportes. "It is understandable. It was very difficult for him to go to both tournaments, you must understand that."
The tournament in Brazil won't be short on talent, however, after it was confirmed last month that Barcelona star Neymar will suit up for the host nation in an apparent effort to exorcise the demons of the country's failed bid to win the World Cup on home soil in 2014.
