Hungary 'keeper Kiraly, 40, becomes oldest player ever at Euros

A pair of sweatpants are now nestled in the European Championship record book. Neatly folded and bearing a grass stain on the knee, one would presume.

By virtue of his appearance in Tuesday's contest against Austria, Hungarian goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly became the oldest player to ever appear at the tournament, standing between the posts at 40 years and 75 days young.

The previous record belonged to German icon Lothar Matthaus, who featured in Euro 2000 when he was 39 years old.

Kiraly, who leads his country with 103 caps heading into the competition, is likely to extend his record until at least the conclusion of the group stage - and perhaps further if Hungary can pull off an upset and reach the knockout rounds.

"I've always told him that age isn't important for me," manager Bernd Storck said of his veteran shot-stopper.

"I don't care if a player is young or old, he has to be good. Gabor is good - he's outstanding. He radiates confidence and is a goalkeeper with an incredible aura and charisma. He will help us be successful at the Euros."
