Twitter reacts to Germany overcoming Italy in enthralling shootout
Jonas Hector steered the 18th penalty of an error-strewn yet captivating shootout beyond Gianluigi Buffon on Saturday, sending Germany into Euro 2016's semi-finals.
When the coin toss determined the penalties would be taken from the goal in front of Italy's fans, it marked one of the biggest cheers of Saturday from the Azzurri supporters. History, however, didn't point to Antonio Conte's side coming out of the match with the victory:
When it comes to shoot outs in major tournaments:#GER P6 W5 L1 – have won their last 5#ITA P8 W3 L5 – have won 3 of last 4

Forty years and 13 days since Germany's last and only penalty shoot-out defeat...

Germany haven't missed a penalty in a shoot out since 1982. 21 consecutive successful executions.

But this shootout was a little different:
#GER have missed more penalties tonight than they have in all previous shootouts at major tournaments combined

Blimey . . more German players have missed shootout penalties in the last five minutes than the previous 40 years

The unfortunate last penalty taker to fail was Matteo Darmian, who incredibly followed Simone Zaza, Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, Graziano Pelle, Leonardo Bonucci, and Bastian Schweinsteiger as the seventh player to miss from 12 yards:
Darmian looked nervous and it showed. Neuer smothers it and Germany can win now

Hector drills it under Buffon and Germany win a largely rubbish penalty shoot out and go into Euro 2016 semi-final.
