Italian football federation wants Euro 2020 postponed
Representatives for the Italian football federation (FIGC) will push UEFA to postpone Euro 2020 so that Serie A and the rest of Europe's top leagues have the option of playing through the summer.
"We will propose that UEFA postpone the European Championship," FIGC president Gabriele Gravina said on Italian television, according to BBC Sport. "We will try to get to the end of (the Serie A) championship because it is fairer and more correct after the many investments and sacrifices of our clubs."
Leagues are currently suspended across the continent due to concerns over the coronavirus. It's unclear when play will resume.
UEFA scheduled a video call for Tuesday with all 55 member nations to discuss the future of domestic and European competitions.
A source told Rob Harris of The Associated Press that organizers could delay the Euros until next year. That would give teams in their respective leagues enough time to complete their seasons.
The tournament is due to kick off June 12 in Rome.
All options are on the table, according to The Guardian's Ed Aarons, including truncating the Euro 2020 schedule or scrapping some of the venues.
Serie A was one of the first leagues to be affected by the coronavirus. The league shut down completely Monday upon orders from the government, which banned sporting events from taking place until at least April 3. It later put the entire country under lockdown.
Spain and France enacted similar measures in recent days, raising doubts about the continuation of their domestic leagues. La Liga postponed matches for two weeks, while Ligue 1 suspended operations indefinitely.
Several clubs have players in quarantine, including the Premier League's Leicester City and Arsenal, Serie A's Juventus, and La Liga's Real Madrid and Valencia.
Since the outbreak began, Italy has recorded nearly 25,000 cases of COVID-19 and almost 2,000 deaths.
