Canada's qualifier with Cayman Islands postponed due to COVID-19 issues

Canada's World Cup qualifier against the Cayman Islands was officially postponed 36 minutes before Sunday's scheduled kickoff after the Caribbean side "was not able to submit the required COVID-19 testing information in time," FIFA said in a statement.

Their meeting has been rescheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. ET.

"This decision has been taken to ensure the safety of all participants in the match," FIFA added.

The match, which they will eventually play in Florida, is the second outing of both national teams' qualification campaigns for Qatar 2022. Canada beat Bermuda 5-1 in its opening game on Thursday, while Suriname topped the Cayman Islands a day earlier with a 3-0 win.

"All Canada Soccer staff and players have received negative testing prior to arriving and while in camp in Florida," the country's association said in a statement.

There is renewed optimism around Canada's men's team. John Herdman's outfit logged a landmark 2-0 CONCACAF Nations League victory over the United States in October 2019 and then recorded their commanding qualifying win over Bermuda without the services of the injured Jonathan Osorio and Lille striker Jonathan David, who was unable to travel due to France's quarantine regulations.

Canada follows its tussle with the Cayman Islands with two more qualifiers in June against Aruba and Suriname.
