Russell wins wild Brazilian GP for 1st career victory

George Russell won Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix after starting from pole position to claim his first career Formula One victory.

The Mercedes driver stayed away from the chaos that plagued numerous other drivers throughout the race.

Russell's teammate Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull's Max Verstappen were involved in a collision early on, but both managed to continue. Hamilton secured his third consecutive runner-up finish and fifth of the season.

Verstappen caused a stir when he refused to allow teammate Sergio Perez to pass him toward the end of the race. Perez is in a tightly-contested battle with Charles Leclerc for second place in the drivers' standings.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz placed third.

McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo and Haas' Kevin Magnussen also collided on the first lap, triggering an early yellow flag.

Engine failure forced Lando Norris to retire from the race on Lap 53.
