Perez leads dominant 1-2 for Red Bull at Azerbaijan GP
Red Bull's Sergio Perez claimed his second victory of the young Formula 1 season, winning the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at Baku City Circuit on Sunday.
This is Perez's second win at Baku, winning in 2021 as well for his first as a member of Red Bull.
This caps off a dominant weekend for Perez, who won Saturday's sprint race as well to add an additional eight points to his cause. However, Verstappen still holds the championship lead by six points.
The Mexican was followed across the line by teammate and reigning champion Max Verstappen. Verstappen and Perez each have two race wins. This is the third time this year through four races that the two Red Bulls have finished 1-2.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who started the race in pole position after posting the fastest qualifying time for the third straight year at Baku, rounded out the podium in third. It's Ferrari's first podium of the year.
It continues to be an impressive season for two-time champ Fernando Alonso, who joined Aston Martin over the winter. The Spanish driver finished fourth, which is his worst placement of the year after finishing on the edge of the podium in each of the previous three grand prix.
Mercedes' George Russell, who finished eighth, nabbed an extra point by claiming the fastest lap on the final trip around Baku on fresh soft tires.
Alpine's Esteban Ocon caused some late-race mayhem. He nearly went the entire race without making a pitstop before coming in on the final lap while people had already started filing onto the pit wall to celebrate the completion of the race.
AlphaTauri rookie Nyck de Vries retired early with a broken suspension that caused a safety car as the car awaited tow. As a result, de Vries will remain one of two drivers this year to not score any points so far, alongside Williams rookie Logan Sargeant. He crossed the line 16th on Sunday ahead of Nico Hulkenberg and Valtteri Bottas.
Alfa Romeo's Zhou Guanyu also suffered a DNF.
