Leclerc holds off Piastri to win Italian GP

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc held off McLaren's Oscar Piastri to win Sunday's Italian Grand Prix.

Piastri's teammate Lando Norris finished third, allowing McLaren to close the gap on Red Bull to just eight points for first place in the constructors' standings.

Leclerc is the first Ferrari driver to win at Monza since his victory at the 2019 Italian Grand Prix.

"It's an incredible feeling," Leclerc said following the race. "Monaco and Monza are the two races I want to win every year. Obviously, I want to win as many races as possible and the world championship as soon as possible, but these are the two most important races of the season, and I managed to win them this year."

Leclerc won Driver of the Day after he held on for the win despite only pitting once. The bold strategy paid off, even though Leclerc's tires showed considerable wear in the final few laps.

Norris started on pole but fell out of first place on the first lap. Piastri continues his recent run of form, finishing on the podium for the third time in the last four races.
