Red Bull's Jean-Eric Vergne hospitalized after Australian Grand Prix due to weight loss
Red Bull's Jean-Eric Vergne revealed he was hospitalized following last month's Australian Grand Prix due to weight loss.
"I was in hospital between the grands prix in Australia and Malaysia because of a lack of water and a little bit of lack of everything. I was very weak," Vergne stated via the Daily Mail.
The 23-year-old was required to diet in order to meet Formula One's new weight regulations, which has been set at a minimum 692 kilograms (1,525 lbs) for car and driver combined.
"I did diet this winter but you get to certain limits that the body can no longer take."
Vergne drives for Red Bull's junior team Toro Rosso, and admitted that he and fellow drivers are irritated by the weight restriction.
"Frankly, the situation is stupid. Some lighter drivers want to keep their edge, and we have not reached a solution. Formula one cars are very difficult to drive and we need all of our skills. Being forced to lose weight is not good."
