Tielemans completes Monaco switch for reported €23M fee
AS Monaco announced the acquisition of highly touted midfielder Youri Tielemans from Anderlecht on Wednesday, penning the 20-year-old Belgian international to a five-year contract through 2022.
He completes the switch for a reported €23-million fee, according to Mohamed Bouhafsi of RMC Sport, which would make Tielemans the most expensive player to come out of the Belgian Pro League (eclipsing Marouane Fellaini's €22-million move to Everton).
Tielemans joins a Monaco midfield brimming with central options such as Fabinho and Tiemoue Bakayoko, but with the two commanding plenty of interest in the summer transfer window, the domestic champion might see the signing of Tielemans as a way of mitigating a potential sale or two.
In that regard, Tielemans is a fine option. The two-time Belgian Young Player of the Year made 53 total appearances for Anderlecht last season, scoring 18 goals and recording 15 assists across all competitions.
His versatility in midfield should serve Monaco well, too, as Tielemans can play in multiple positions, as both an attacking and defensive midfielder.
