Report: Bordeaux in talks with Henry to replace Poyet as manager
Thierry Henry's managerial debut could come close to home as Bordeaux are reportedly in talks with the former Arsenal striker to replace currently suspended manager Gus Poyet, according to The Guardian's Dominic Fifield.
Poyet launched a verbal tirade against his own club's executives at a press conference last Thursday following Les Girondins' second-leg victory over Mariupol in the third round of Europa League qualifying. The 50-year-old Uruguayan slammed the board for offloading forward Gaetan Laborde to Montpellier despite the manager pleading with it not to, leading to club president Stephane Martin suspending him for a week.
If finalized, the appointment would reunite Henry with former club and international teammate Patrick Vieira in Ligue 1. Vieira took over in June as manager of Cote d'Azur outfit Nice after two-and-a-half years with New York City FC.
Henry most recently served as an assistant on Roberto Martinez's technical staff with Belgium, helping the nation reach the World Cup semifinals where it fell to France.
The 41-year-old still ranks as both Arsenal's and France's all-time top scorer with 228 and 51 goals, respectively. He announced he was stepping down from international duty with Les Bleus following the 2010 World Cup before retiring from football entirely in 2015 after five seasons in Major League Soccer with the New York Red Bulls (with a brief return to the Gunners on loan in 2012).
Bordeaux currently sit 18th in Ligue 1, without a point from their first two matches.
