Europa League roundup: Shock exit for Leicester, Milan squeeze through
Tottenham already booked their place in the last 16 with an early game Wednesday. Below, we round up how the rest of the Europa League second-leg fixtures fared Thursday.
Late kickoffs
AC Milan 1-1 Crvena Zvezda - Milan win on away goals (3-3 on agg.)
Milan toiled against 10-man Crvena Zvezda but ultimately advanced on away goals. The Rossoneri need to improve if they have any hope of winning the Europa League - and, indeed, Serie A - as they failed to create many decent opportunities on home turf.
Bayer Leverkusen 0-2 Young Boys - Young Boys win 6-3 on agg.
There will be plenty of teams wanting to avoid Young Boys in the last-16 draw after this doubleheader result. The Swiss club withstood plenty of second-half pressure from Bayer Leverkusen while netting twice, completing its first-ever win on German soil.
Club Brugge 0-1 Dynamo Kyiv - Dynamo win 2-1 on agg.
Dynamo Kyiv reached the round of 16 for the third time in four seasons after seeing off Club Brugge. Vitaliy Buyalskiy's late winner ensured there was a dramatic finale at the Jan Breydelstadion.
Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 FC Krasnodar - Dinamo win 4-2 on agg.
Dinamo Zagreb did a professional job in the Croatian capital, engineering a rather comfortable 1-0 triumph over Krasnodar. Mislav Orsic wrapped up a well-worked team move for the second leg's only goal.
Leicester City 0-2 Slavia Prague - Slavia win 2-0 on agg.
Lukas Provod finished unmarked at the far post to end Leicester City's run of 234 minutes without conceding in the Europa League, and Abdallah Sima officially concluded their tournament with a fine 79th-minute strike. Slavia Prague deserved to advance at the Foxes' expense.
Manchester United 0-0 Real Sociedad - United win 4-0 on agg.
Manchester United's 4-0 victory in last week's reverse fixture was the most one-sided result of the opening legs, so this meeting felt like a formality. Shola Shoretire became the youngest United player to appear in a European game at 17 years and 23 days when he was called off the bench.
PSV Eindhoven 2-1 Olympiacos - Olympiacos win 5-4 on agg.
Eran Zahavi scored his second courtesy of a beautiful free-kick, giving PSV the advantage on away goals just before the interval. However, a remarkable comeback was stopped dead by Ahmed Hassan's close-range finish in the 88th minute.
Roma 3-1 Braga - Roma win 5-1 on agg.
Edin Dzeko, Carles Perez, and Borja Mayoral notched a goal apiece to ease Roma's path into the round of 16. The Italian club was denied its fourth consecutive clean sheet in the competition when Bryan Cristante poked the ball into his own net.
Early kickoffs
Arsenal 3-2 Benfica - Arsenal win 4-3 on agg.
A brutal giveaway from Dani Ceballos almost ended Arsenal's Europa League campaign on another sour note. But Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came to the rescue with a dramatic winning goal late in the contest to break Benfica's hearts and launch the Gunners into the round of 16.
Rangers 5-2 Antwerp - Rangers win 9-5 on agg.
Rangers emerged victorious from what's been the most entertaining matchup of the round of 32 so far. After beating Royal Antwerp 4-3 in the first leg, the Scottish club thumped the Belgian outfit in another exciting, high-scoring affair that ended 5-2 at Ibrox.
Villarreal 2-1 Red Bull Salzburg - Villarreal win 4-1 on agg.
There was hardly any reason for Villarreal to be concerned on Thursday, as the Spanish comfortably progressed to the round of 16 after securing a win against a lackluster Red Bull Salzburg side.
Napoli 2-1 Granada - Granada win 3-2 on agg.
The 2-0 first-leg deficit proved to be too much for Napoli to overcome, as Granada booked an unexpected spot in the next phase of the Europa League after holding off the Italian side's efforts in a hard-fought second leg.
Hoffenheim 0-2 Molde - Molde win 5-3 on agg.
After scoring three away goals in an exciting first leg that ended 3-3, Hoffenheim couldn't find the back of the net when it mattered most in Thursday's upset home loss to FK Molde.
Ajax 2-1 LOSC Lille - Ajax win 4-2 on agg.
Ajax followed up their first-leg away triumph with an equally impressive performance, beating Ligue 1 leaders Lille 2-1 in Amsterdam to win the last-32 encounter.
Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 Maccabi Tel-Aviv - Shakhtar win 3-0 on agg.
Junior Moraes' penalty sealed the win for Shakhtar Donetsk, with the Ukrainians producing two clean sheets in a row against their Israeli opponents en route to securing a spot in the next phase of the competition.
