Montpellier have appointed former Paris Saint-Germain defender Zoumana Camara as their new head coach, the rock-bottom Ligue 1 club announced on Tuesday.

The 46-year-old will be in his first head coaching role, after previously being an assistant coach and a youth coach at PSG.

Montpellier are rooted to the foot of the French top flight, 12 points from guaranteed safety with six matches of the season remaining.

The club sacked previous boss Jean-Louis Gasset on Monday after just five months at the helm following a run of nine successive defeats.

Montpellier said in a statement that Camara's goal is to "prepare for the future as best as possible".

Camara won seven major trophies as a player during eight seasons at PSG after signing from Saint-Etienne in 2007.

He won his only cap for France during their victorious 2001 Confederations Cup campaign.
