Thiago Motta's future was clouded by uncertainty this summer, as there were questions over what role he could still play at Paris Saint-Germain as well as a personal admission that he was open to returning to Inter Milan.

Now, all that is in the past.

PSG extended Motta's contract until June 2017 on Friday, finally bringing an end to "several weeks of negotiations" that kicked off at the end of last season.

Motta joined PSG in 2013. He started only 25 Ligue 1 fixtures last season and didn't tally a single goal - largely because of a crowded central midfield that included Yohan Cabaye, who has since joined Crystal Palace, and Blaise Matuidi.

"I am extremely happy to see Thiago Motta extend his contract," PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi said. "Thiago is a fan favourite, as we saw during the last match at the Parc des Princes, when the crowd chanted his name several times. Since the start of this season, he has once again proved what an important element he remains in our playing system.

"Over the past few years, his immense experience has been crucial in the team's progress. His experience in the Champions League, that he has already won twice, will once again be integral to the club's ambitions to take the next step in Europe. For me, there was never any question of letting such a great player leave the club."

The contract extension is sure to be well-received by manager Laurent Blanc, who admitted earlier this month: "I hope he still is (our player) on Sept. 1."
