AC Milan appointed former captain and five-time Champions League winner Paolo Maldini as their new director of strategic development on Sunday, marking a triumphant return to the club he represented for his entire 24-year career.

Maldini will work in Milan's sporting area alongside former teammate Leonardo.

"There are few words to describe what Maldini represents for AC Milan," club president Paolo Scaroni said in a statement. "It was a privilege watching him as a player, winning countless trophies on the pitch, and I am excited and honored to be working with him today in this new role. Paolo's leadership and experience will benefit the club greatly, as will his passion and energy."

It's yet another sign of hedge fund Elliott Management's commitment to restoring Milan. With the help of their advisors, Milan have overturned a European ban, signed Gonzalo Higuain and Mattia Caldara, and now reunited Maldini with the only club he has ever known.

Maldini said repeatedly in the past he would only accept a role at Milan if the project was serious. He turned down a proposal from the previous Chinese ownership group, citing doubts about its plans and the role he was offered.

His suspicions were confirmed when Li Yonghong defaulted on a loan payment and ceded control of the club.

Elliott isn't done yet. Reports continue to link Arsenal CEO Ivan Gazidis with Milan's vacant executive position, as well as AS Roma chief Umberto Gandini with a return to the club.
