Milan, June 7, 2022 (AFP) - Udinese have hired their former player Andrea Sottil as new coach, the Serie A club announced on Tuesday, a day after he left his previous job at Ascoli.

In a statement, Udinese said that Sottil had "signed a contract with the club until 30 June 2023, with the option of extending it to the following season".

Sottil, who played 115 times and scored seven goals for Udinese between 1999 and 2003, left Ascoli on Monday after guiding them to the Serie B play-offs in his one full season in charge at the club.

The 48-year-old replaces Gabriele Cioffi, who after taking over as caretaker in December dragged Udinese out of the relegation zone and into a respectable 12th place.

Cioffi has been named among the favourites for the vacant position at Verona after Udinese decided not to renew his contract.
