Atletico Madrid reaches agreement with Pacos de Ferreira for Diogo Jota
It's official. Diogo Jota is at the Vicente Calderon.
On Wednesday, Atletico Madrid reached an agreement with Pacos de Ferreira that saw the Colchoneros sign Jota, a 19-year-old Portuguese wonderkid, to a five-year contract.
Jota joined Pacos de Ferreira's academy at the age of 16 and scored on his debut, which came in the Taca de Portugal. He then scored twice in a Primeira Liga fixture, becoming the youngest player to tally a brace in the top flight of Portuguese football since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2002. After the teenager scored an absolutely stunning goal against Benfica in February, Pacos de Ferreira's president announced that a deal had been agreed for the youngster to join Atleti.
"He is a young player, very fast and vertical, carries the ball very well and has a great outrun," Jose Luis Perez Caminero, Atleti's sporting director, said. "Diogo has a great projection and stands out for his one-on-one and his versatility, because he can play in several positions."
Jota tallied 12 goals in the Primeira Liga last season, becoming the second-ever played aged 19 or under to reach double figures in a single season in the top flight of Portuguese football.
