Messi, English clubs donate shirts to raise funds for hit-and-run victims
Two non-league football players who were hit-and-run victims are getting a little help from one of the world's greatest players after Lionel Messi signed and donated a Barcelona strip to help raise money.
Shaun Whiter and Joey Abbs, formerly members of Newmarket Town, were changing a car tire when a another vehicle struck them. Whiter lost both of his legs while Abbs sustained a serious leg injury.
The Barcelona star, and teammate Arda Turan donated shirts that will be auctioned off during a fundraising campaign hosted by Cambridge United on Oct. 9.
"I can't thank Lionel Messi and Arda Turan enough for donating their shirts and getting them to Cambridge," Whiter told the BBC.
"We're going to auction them off and see what we can get."
Players from Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, and the England senior squad have also donated jerseys to be auctioned off.
The driver, Jan Adamec, pleaded guilty and was subsequently sentenced to three years and four months in prison.
