Alexandre Pato has switched clubs for the third time in little more than 12 months - this time for the riches of the Chinese Super League.

The 27-year-old was pictured with new club Tianjin Quanjian on Monday, posing beside manager Fabio Cannavaro and fellow big-money acquisition Axel Witsel.

Pato completed the move from Villarreal for a €18-million fee, according to the Guardian's Marcus Christenson.

Villarreal, however, has yet to provide a statement on the transfer.

"I'm very happy to be part of the Tianjin Quanjian family," Pato wrote on Twitter.

Pato only joined Villarreal last summer as he attempted to rebuild his career in Europe. A short-lived stay at Chelsea for the second half of last season did not provide the kick-start he needed after leaving Brazilian outfit Corinthians.

He is one of several high-profile footballers, including Carlos Tevez and Oscar, to head east this month.

Witsel arrived from Zenit St. Petersburg early in the January transfer window on a five-year contract worth a reported €20 million per season.

It's unclear how much Pato is expected to earn.

Tianjin Quanjian, newly promoted to the CSL, had scoured Europe for a striker to lead its attack for the upcoming campaign. Reported bids to sign Chelsea's Diego Costa, Fiorentina's Nikola Kalinic, and Real Madrid's Karim Benzema did not work.

Instead, Pato has come to China to accompany one of the country's most ambitious clubs. An impending cap on foreign players did not deter Tianjin Quanjian from making the signing, and his overall renown will no doubt attract admirers in a growing football nation.

The Brazilian rose to stardom as a teenager with AC Milan before injuries stopped his progress and forced him to seek medical treatment across Europe and the United States. He took revenge at Corinthians in 2013 and slowly returned to health and the score sheet, but a second crack at European football ultimately did not pay off.

Pato scored just two La Liga goals in 14 appearances with Villarreal.
