Poll: Was Ronaldo's bicycle kick the greatest goal in Champions League history?
Cristiano Ronaldo had the entirety of the Allianz Stadium on their feet during Real Madrid's first-leg Champions League quarter-final bout with Juventus, scoring an absolutely brilliant bicycle kick in a 3-0 win away from home.
While it was equal parts magnificent and well-timed, Ronaldo's overhead kick could also rank as the greatest goal ever scored in Europe's top-tier club competition. Is there another strike finer? Let's take a look back.
Zidane's volley vs. Leverkusen
Ronaldo's own manager Zinedine Zidane once left Bayer Leverkusen fans stunned with this incredible pivot-and-volley, which is remembered fondly as one of the Frenchman's most iconic goals in a white Real Madrid shirt. Even Zidane believes this goal to be better than Ronaldo's most recent effort:
Messi's solo run vs. Real Madrid
Of course, no mention of Ronaldo is complete without also mentioning his arch-nemesis Lionel Messi, who left his Portuguese counterpart and the rest of Real Madrid's backline in his dust as he pulled off an incredible solo run to goal before beating Iker Casillas at the far post.
Ronaldo's rocket vs. FC Porto
Ronaldo's most recent effort was certainly a treat to watch, but was it even his own greatest goal in the Champions League? It's a toss-up between his bicycle kick and this incredible rocket shot against FC Porto, which Ronaldo scored while playing for Manchester United.
Stankovic's screamer vs. Schalke
Long-range strikes are in their own category of extraordinary, and perhaps none are as audacious as Dejan Stankovic's fortuitous screamer at Schalke's expense. While Internazionale would go on to lose to the German outfit 5-2 on aggregate, the Serbia international will still remember this matchup fondly.
Mandzukic's equalizer vs. Real Madrid
If long-range screamers are rare, bicycle kicks are doubly so, but Ronaldo may have been inspired by one of Juventus' own overhead kicks scored against Real Madrid in the 2017 Champions League final. It was none other than Mario Mandzukic who found the aesthetically-pleasing equaliser, which didn't hold as Madrid went on to win courtesy of Ronaldo's non-acrobatic efforts.
Bressan's bicycle vs. Barcelona
Was the greatest goal in Champions League history even scored in the 21st century? Combining two rare categories of bicycle kicks and long-distance shots, Fiorentina midfielder Mauro Bressan's scored an amazing overhead kick from well outside the box, leaving Barcelona stunned in this 1999 matchup.
