Report: Bartomeu wants new deals for Messi, Ter Stegen
Josep Maria Bartomeu is hoping to sign Lionel Messi and Marc-Andre ter Stegen to new contracts before he leaves as Barcelona's president, sources told ESPN's Moises Llorens and Sam Marsden.
Messi's deal runs until 2021, but the Argentine reportedly has the option to unilaterally terminate his contract this summer.
Although there's less urgency to tie down Ter Stegen - his current deal runs until 2022 - sources told ESPN that Barcelona will offer the German netminder improved terms before the end of the season. The 27-year-old's spectacular performances have made a renewal one of Barcelona's priorities in 2020.
To convince the pair to stay, Barcelona will invest heavily in the summer. Paris Saint-Germain's Neymar and Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez are reportedly among the club's top targets.
Messi has openly questioned Barcelona and management in recent weeks, raising doubts about his future with the club. The usually reserved 32-year-old fired a salvo at sporting director Eric Abidal in February after the former defender suggested the players were behind Ernesto Valverde's dismissal as manager.
While reiterating his desire to finish his career at Barcelona, Messi said he wants the club to be "in good shape, for the fans to be happy with the team we have, for there to be a winning project, and for us to continue being candidates to win trophies like we always were."
