Report: Arsenal to discuss Lacazette's future amid interest from Atletico
The next couple of weeks could be crucial in determining whether Alexandre Lacazette has a future at Arsenal.
Club officials are expected to hold talks with the French striker in the coming weeks to discuss his role under manager Mikel Arteta amid uncertainty over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's contract situation, according to James Olley of ESPN FC.
Arsenal are determined to avoid losing both players, but if they sign Aubameyang to a new contract, the Gunners may be forced to consider bids for Lacazette due to financial pressures caused by the coronvairus lockdown.
Atletico Madrid have emerged as a contender to make a move for the 29-year-old, who could attract bids as high as £60 million this summer, Olley adds.
Although the Spanish club is committed to signing forward Alvaro Morata to a permanent deal, Atletico are keeping an eye on Lacazette and could intensify their pursuit depending on Aubameyang's decision.
Unlike Aubameyang, whose contract expires next summer, Arsenal will be under less pressure to sign Lacazatte to a new deal. They could also be more inclined to sell him for a premium price considering he's signed until 2022.
Funds from a possible Lacazette sale could then be used toward signing other transfer targets, such as Atletico midfielder Thomas Partey, who is reportedly eager to join Arsenal.
The two clubs have yet to explore the option of a player exchange despite reports over a potential swap involving Lacazette and Partey, Olley reports. Arsenal are reluctant to discuss such a deal amid uncertainty over Aubameyang's future.
Lacazette has scored 45 goals in 89 appearances in all competitions since joining Arsenal from Lyon in 2016.
Arsenal will resume their Premier League campaign against Manchester City on June 17.
