Report: Xabi Alonso to take charge of Borussia Monchengladbach

Xabi Alonso has agreed to succeed Marco Rose as Borussia Monchengladbach manager at the end of the season, according to The Guardian's Fabrizio Romano.

The three-time Bundesliga winner, who retired in 2017 after three years with Bayern Munich, is currently in charge of Real Sociedad's B team, which competes in Spain's third tier.

Alonso, 39, started his playing career with Real Sociedad before he represented Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern. He counts two Champions Leagues and four domestic titles among a multitude of club honors, and enjoyed two European Championship successes and collected a World Cup winners' medal with Spain.

Alonso played under many decorated bosses, including Javier Clemente, Rafael Benitez, Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, and Pep Guardiola.

"I was so lucky to have him in Munich. He understands the game and has curiosity to understand the game," Guardiola once said of Alonso.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has previously expressed his desire to bring Alonso back to the Allianz Arena in the future.

Monchengladbach boss Rose is set to take over Borussia Dortmund in the summer. The mid-February confirmation of his upcoming move was followed by a dour run of seven consecutive defeats before Saturday's overdue win at Schalke.
