Newcastle United submitted an opening bid for Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier, reports BBC Sport's Simon Stone, as the nouveau-riche club attempts to spend its way out of a relegation battle.

The offer amount is undisclosed, though Manchester United and Arsenal both reportedly failed to meet Atleti's £51-million price tag last summer. Newcastle anticipate competition from Chelsea as the reigning European champions deal with injuries to left-back Ben Chilwell and right-back Reece James, The Chronicle's Lee Ryder understands.

Atletico Madrid are expected to reject Newcastle's first bid, according to Chris Waugh and David Ornstein at The Athletic. Trippier has apparently almost agreed to terms with the Magpies, but clauses relating to the team's potential relegation are yet to be determined.

"Trippier now has to decide if he wants to leave or not," Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone said on Saturday, as quoted by Ryder. "We will move on his decision."

Trippier, 31, played for Newcastle boss Eddie Howe at Burnley. He's expected to be one of the first of four-to-six arrivals at St. James' Park during the January transfer window. Newcastle are also seeking two center-backs, a left-back, a midfielder, and a striker over this month, The Athletic reports.
