Cadiz wants Real Madrid to be held accountable for its irresponsible actions.

Speaking after his club's controversial 3-1 defeat in the first leg of the Copa del Rey's round of 32, Manuel Vizcaino, the president of Cadiz, confirmed a complaint will be filed against Real Madrid for fielding Denis Cheryshev, who was allegedly ineligible to play.

"Cadiz has decided to complain over Real Madrid's ineligible lineup," Vizcaino said. "There are things that are above all else: respect for football, for the supporters and for the history of the club."

Shortly after the match's kickoff, reports in Spain started circulating, alleging Cheryshev, who opened the scoring in the third minute, was ineligible to play due to his accumulation of three yellow cards from the 2014-15 Copa del Rey. The Russian attacking midfielder featured for Villarreal last season, and Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez admitted after the final whistle: "We had no idea that Cheryshev was ineligible to play."

Article 76 of the Real Federacion Espanola de Futbol's disciplinary code states a club in violation of fielding an ineligible footballer will see the tie be decided in its opponent's favour. As Sid Lowe points out, Cadiz's complaint essentially translates to a request for Real Madrid to be kicked out of the Copa del Rey, as Osasuna was in September due to a similar case.
