A pair of red cards to Rayo reduced the visitor's ranks to nine men in the opening half, and Madrid took advantage of the spaces created by those absences to great effect.
Bale's first goal came early in the first stanza, his diving header equalising for Real Madrid when Rayo actually held a 2-1 lead at the time.
Bale added a second at the stroke of half-time as he and his two strike partners, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, galloped past the Rayo backline.
The Welsh international completed his hat-trick on the hour mark with a diving tap-in effort, then added a fourth goal 10 minutes later before being substituted for Alvaro Arbeloa.
