USGA cancels local qualifying, 'premature to speculate' on U.S. Open

The USGA canceled first-stage (local) qualifying for both the U.S. Open and U.S. Women's Open on Tuesday.

The organization also canceled two other events but added "it's premature to speculate what might occur with other 2020 USGA championships," which includes the major tournaments for both the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour.

The CDC's recommendation against mass gatherings of more than 50 people is in place for the next eight weeks and, as of now, ends on May 10. Many local qualifiers were scheduled to begin before then across the country.

Additionally, the U.S. Open is set to be held at Winged Foot Golf Club in Westchester County, New York. Recently, part of Westchester County was placed under quarantine to help contain the spread of COVID-19.

"I've been getting all sorts of questions about whether we're going to be able to have a U.S. Open this year," the USGA's Mike Davis told John Feinstein of Golf Digest. "Last week, I was laughing when people brought it up. Then yesterday, part of Westchester County was quarantined. I’m not laughing so much anymore."

The U.S. Open is scheduled to begin June 18. The U.S. Women's Open is slated to start June 4 at Champions Golf Club in Houston.
