Club America thrash Atlanta in CONCACAF quarters
Los Angeles, March 12, 2020 (AFP) - Two first-half goals in two minutes from Henry Martin and Leo Suarez set up Club America's 3-0 victory over Atlanta United in the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday.
Bruno Valdez added a third nine minutes before half-time in Mexico City to give Club America a comfortable quarter-final cushion ahead of the second leg.
Pity Martinez and Fernando Meza went closest for Atlanta, but both saw shots come back off the crossbar, and the visitors also lost new signing Matheus Rossetto in the 58th-minute to a leg injury.
Elsewhere, Eduardo Vargas grabbed a dramatic 1-0 away win for Tigres UANL two minutes into of second-half stoppage time as New York City FC saw their CONCACAF hopes dealt a blow at the Red Bull Arena.
NYCFC paid dearly for not scoring when on top in the first half when several chances went begging as Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman pulled off a string of saves.
