The Los Angeles Dodgers were so close.
The San Francisco Giants put up three runs in the fifth inning of Thursday's game, marking the first runs the Dodgers have given up this season in 31 innings - one shy of the MLB record, set by the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals.
Dodgers starter Alex Wood was cruising until it all fell apart in the fifth. While he seemed bothered by the turn of events, he was more concerned with the result.
"You can't not think about it, but at the same time, it doesn't change what I'm trying to do," Wood told reporters. "We lost today, that's all that really matters. In terms of whatever record, who really cares?"
Here's how the streak unceremoniously ended:
| Player | Result |
|---|---|
| B. Crawford | Walk |
| K. Tomlinson | Single |
| A. Pagan | Groundout |
| D. Span | Groundout (RBI) |
| J. Panik | Triple (RBI) |
| B. Posey | Double (RBI) |
| H. Pence | Walk |
| B. Belt | Groundout |
Wood didn't make it out of the sixth, finishing the game with eight hits allowed, five earned runs, two walks, and three strikeouts.
Considering the fact the Dodgers pummeled the San Diego Padres 25-0 over the first three games of the season, Wood's numbers don't exactly match up with the rest of Los Angeles' rotation so far:
| Pitcher | IP | H | ER | BB | SO | ERA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| C. Kershaw | 7 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 9 | 0.00 |
| S. Kazmir | 6 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 5 | 0.00 |
| K. Maeda | 6 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 5 | 0.00 |
| A. Wood | 5 | 8 | 5 | 2 | 3 | 9.00 |
The Giants ended the game by pounding out 12 runs on 17 hits, including an eighth inning grand slam by Hunter Pence.
