Weiss: Puig's throw reminded me of Bo Jackson

Yasiel Puig's jaw-dropping, 310-foot throw Friday at Coors Field evoked memories of Jose Guillen's ridiculous toss from 1998, but Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss was reminded of another former star when Puig nailed Trevor Story at third base from just shy of the right-field warning track.

"It reminded me of that Bo Jackson throw I saw years ago when he threw out Harold Reynolds in the Kingdome," Weiss told MLB.com's Ken Gurnick. "It was very similar to that. I thought he was too far away to get the ball to third before Story got there, but he's a gifted player. That was impressive."

Jackson, the impossibly talented two-sport star who dazzled fans on the diamond and the gridiron, often drew praise for his throwing arm, but the rocket he unleashed to cut down Reynolds on June 5, 1989 was so unbelievable, it got its own chapter in the ESPN 30 For 30 documentary about his career.

Despite the lofty comparison, however, and the praise from his own manager, Dave Roberts, Puig was somewhat cavalier about his throw after the Los Angeles Dodgers' 7-5 loss in their series opener.

"If I can't do it with my bat and I can't do it with my glove, I'll do it with my arm," said Puig. "I have to do something to help my team. I just try to throw to the base and my teammates do the rest."

On Saturday morning, though, Puig joked on Twitter that he'll hit the cutoff man next time.
