Heyward to have MRI after spectacular catch
The Chicago Cubs continued their torrid start to the season Friday with an 8-1 win in San Francisco, but the health of right fielder Jason Heyward was the biggest talking point following the game.
After landing awkwardly while making a spectacular, diving catch on a fly ball from Denard Span in the fifth inning, Heyward - who writhed in pain on the warning track and was removed from the game moments later - told reporters he'll undergo an MRI on Saturday.
"There's some pain," Heyward told MLB.com's Carrie Muskat a few hours after his spectacular grab. "Not sharp but a little more than dull. What happened was the lower rib cage bone and the hip bone hit each other when I was pushed up against the wall."
Heyward was relieved, however, he didn't suffer any broken bones on the play.
"Luckily, nothing is broken," Heyward said. "We'll see how it feels tomorrow after the MRI."
Heyward, who walked in his lone plate appearance Friday, owns a .611 OPS with one home run in 37 games this season, adding five stolen bases for the league-leading Cubs, who improved to 29-11.
"It's unfortunate it had to happen that way," Cubs starter Jake Arrieta said. "He put his body on the line to make a play. His ability to stay focused on the ball while traveling at a high speed with no regard for the wall ... he's the best in the league."
