The Washington Nationals sent closer Jonathan Papelbon to the 15-day disabled list due to a right intercostal strain Tuesday, one day after the 35-year-old was curiously left on the bench with a three-run lead in the ninth inning.

After the Nationals secured a 4-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night, with Shawn Kelley recording the final five outs en route to his second save of 2016, manager Dusty Baker explained that Papelbon was "feeling pretty sore" and noted the six-time All-Star would be evaluated Tuesday.

Papelbon, who didn't speak with the media following Monday's game, last pitched Sunday against Philadelphia, allowing the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth before Washington's offense walked off the Phillies in the home half, but didn't mention any physical issues after his outing.

"I feel like I've been as successful as I have been in many other years," Papelbon told Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post. "I haven't been that great in tie ballgames this year, but when my number's called for save situations, you know .…"

Still, while Papelbon has converted 16 saves in 18 chances this year, his 3.28 ERA through 25 appearances is his worst since 2010, while his velocity and strikeout numbers have tailed off considerably.

In a corresponding move, the Nationals reinstated right-hander Matt Belisle, who has been on the disabled list since April 27 due to a right calf strain.
