Pirates send ailing Cole to DL, recall Taillon

Forced from Friday's start due to triceps tightness, Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole has landed on the 15-day disabled list, and top prospect Jameson Taillon has been recalled from Triple-A to start in his stead Tuesday in New York, reports MLB.com's Adam Berry.

Though Pirates general manager Neal Huntington conceded after Cole's abbreviated outing against St. Louis that he would "almost certainly" miss his next start, the club decided he will need more than a few days to recover and shut him down just hours before he was slated to take the mound at Citi Field.

Cole, whose stint on the disabled list is retroactive to June 12, was enjoying another strong season before his triceps started barking, posting a 2.77 ERA (144 ERA+) with a 1.32 WHIP in his first 12 starts. Before being chased just two innings in Friday at PNC Park, the 25-year-old has allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his previous six outings, allowing just two homers in 39 innings over that span.

Taillon, meanwhile, will return to Pittsburgh just six days after making his highly anticipated MLB debut, in which he allowed three runs while fanning three in six innings against the Mets. Optioned back to Triple-A after Wednesday's start, Taillon - the second overall pick in the 2010 draft - didn't throw a pitch for the Indianapolis Indians before being recalled to replace Cole.
