Padres catcher throws 49-mph, 94-mph pitches in relief
The San Diego Padres might want to consider using Christian Bethancourt in a close game next time.
Bethancourt, the Padres catcher who created a buzz last month when he played four positions and threw a 96-mph fastball during the same game, made his second pitching appearance of the season in Monday's 13-4 loss to the Miami Marlins, and authored one of the most improbable pitch sequences of the year.
Facing the Marlins' Chris Johnson during the ninth inning, Bethancourt began the count with a 49-mph eephus before inducing a fly out to center two pitches later with a 94-mph heater. He struck out his next batter looking with a 79-mph changeup before working around a walk and single to close out the scoreless inning unscathed.
Last month, Bethancourt became just the fifth player in history to play catcher, left field, second base, and pitch in the same game.
