Kike Hernandez shaves head in support of father
Kike Hernandez has gone bald for a good cause.
Although he joked he couldn't have "show hair" while his batting average flirts with the Mendoza line, Hernandez said the true reason is to show support of his father, who is undergoing cancer treatment, according to the Orange County Register's Bill Plunkett.
Enrique Sr. is the Pittsburgh Pirates' area scout for Puerto Rico, though he's never been to PNC Park. But when the Los Angeles Dodgers visit Pittsburgh from June 24-27, he'll be in attendance.
After breaking out last season with a .307/.346/.490 slash line, Hernandez has struggled out of the gate this season, stumbling to a .204/.280/.354 with four homers and 28 strikeouts in 56 games.
He added that he's hoping the new look will have a "Trayce effect," citing outfielder Trayce Thompson, who began hitting more after he had a similar haircut in April.
