Baseball’s biggest sluggers are set to showcase their strength at Petco Park on Monday when eight mashers will compete for the 2016 Home Run Derby crown. Here’s everything you need to know about the big-swinging event:

How to watch

When: Monday, July 11 at 8 p.m. ET
TV: ESPN
Streaming: Watch ESPN, MLB.com

Derby participants

This year’s field features an intriguing mix of home run-hitting talent, from hometown hero Wil Myers to rookie sensation Corey Seager, and reigning champ Todd Frazier and 2011 winner Robinson Cano. Frazier and Giancarlo Stanton are the two non-All-Stars in the event, while Adam Duvall joins Myers and Seager in their Derby debuts. Rounding out the field, and returning to the Derby for the first time since 2012, are Mark Trumbo and Carlos Gonzalez.

The eight players are split into two brackets and seeded based on home run totals through June 29.

Format

The single-elimination tournament follows the format of last year’s revamped event. Key rules to know:

  • Timing: Each batter will have four minutes to hit as many homers as possible, beginning with the release of the first pitch. Batters are allowed one 45-second timeout in the first two rounds, and up to two 45-second timeouts in the final.

  • Distance: Batters who hit two home runs of at least 440 feet will be awarded 30 seconds of bonus time.

  • Tiebreaker: If any round ends in a tie, there will be a 60-second swing-off. If there's still a tie after that, batters will alternate three-swing swing-offs until someone wins.
